Madrid, Spain, 21st May 2011

Hello, my name is Angustias Ocańa and I’m writing from Spain, to notify the results of my leonbergers.
At the International Dog Show “Alianza Cinófila Latina”, celebrated on May 21th in Madrid (3528 entries), we were 3ş Best Breeding Group of that day.
I don’t know if this is really important in the “leonberger world”, it really was important for me and my leonberger lover friends, because our breed is almost never considerated at the finals in dog shows and is almost never at the podium, here in Spain.
It didn’t ocurr to me it could be interesting for the rest of european people, but a friend recently convince me of writing and so here I am...

This breeding group was formed by three of my young females of my first litter, they were 10-months-old gentle girls at that moment, their names: “Ewok”, “Geisha” and “Marlene” de la Flor entre Espinas (that’s my kennel name ), their father was “Gismo Von Der Bärenpranke” and their mother is “Ch. Dahlia de la Vallée des Lions”. The jduge of the breeding groups was Roberto Velez-Pico.

I send to you a picture, in case you want to publish the news. These two dog shows, the “alianza cinófila latina” and the “Centenario RSCE” were really special for our leonbergers, because first we went up to the podium in breeding groups and next day, my litter’s grandfather, Ch. Béla Bartók vom Welland, was BOB Veterans and went up to the podium also!!! Very intense and joyful for us!!

Nachruf

Zum ehrenden Gedenken an unseren verstorbenen
Vizepräsident und Ausstellungsobmann.

Träger der DCLH- und VDH Ehrennadel in Gold

  Herr

 Georg Leipelt

 (18. Dezember 1936 – 26. Juni 2011)

Vorstand DCLH

In Remembrance

In commemoration of our deceased
Vice-President and Exhibition Chairman

Carrier of the DCLH- and VDH Golden Pin of Honour

 Mr.

Georg Leipelt

(18.December 1936 – 26.June 2011)

Upon his membership in the DCLH in 1985, Georg Leipelt dedicated a great portion of his life to the Leonberger Pedigree Dogs and the therewith associated Club activities. With his Cynological knowledge and his active function as Vice-President DCLH ( 1991-2011) , he was able to set many valuable and lasting accents.

On an international level Georg from 1991 thru 2008 was a member of the Executive Committee of the international Leonberger Union.  He was always perpetual in his ambition to represent also the goals and directions of the German Club to the world-wide Leonberger family.

Particularly everything having to do with the Exhibitions was a heartfelt matter for him, to which he dedicated himself with extraordinary commitment and perseverance. Our Club-Show in Leonberg with Georg as Club-Show Chairman, were for 19 years inseparably linked to one another. It was never enough for Georg to just participate in the “Club Life”, to “Live the Club”, with all his might, to endorse our common cause, that was his major passion.

In recognition, gratitude and respect, we take part from our Club member, Executive Committee colleague and friend, who we will sadly miss. We will not forget Georg, rather hold him in honourable memory.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family.

Thoughts to the upcoming Holiday Season.

Dear Members of the “International Union”, Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure and at the same time an honour for me, to send in the name of the Board of Directors of the International Union, Christmas and New Years Greetings to the Leonberger Family around the world.

Please allow me to take this opportunity to take a look at the present and to direct our vision towards the future.

Today our Membership Countries represent an active and stabilisation-orientated “International Union”. Let us not forget the past, when we filled with trust and confidence stride towards the future. With some sensitive topics we must occasionally react somewhat conservatively. For us Dog-People this means we must preserve what is valuable but at the same time must be open for new necessities. “Go with the times or you will in time go” , in my opinion this saying applies well to Pedigree Dog Breeding Clubs. To find the right balance between tradition and contemporary is a challenge that we best master with expertise and vision. Let us view our breed not only with sympathy but also with respect in regards to health issues. This is our highest dictum.

Very impressive in a positive sense was the General Meeting 2010. This was a very lively conference, especially as we reached the topic “Vitality” of our breed, which was intensely discussed. It clearly showed that we are the Leonberger Family that we should be, when the named subject is keeping our breed healthy. Genetic illnesses must be rigorously confronted, but also with calmness and expertise. We will not reach our goal if panic is spread. It is absolutely necessary that we work jointly in this area.

To work together and to learn from each other is a guarantor of success. However, teamwork in a global environment which is characterized by diversity is definitely a challenge. It is important that we clearly discuss and define our problems. Even if it is occasionally a difficult and cumbersome road to finding a uniform guideline, it will always be worthwhile!

It is my personal ambition, to bring forward a harmonic cooperation, interchanging ideas and good teamwork amongst us all. Let us continue to work together with vision directed towards the future for a strong Leonberger Union.

May the Christmas Season give you and your Families new strength and hope for the

New Year 2011. I wish you all the best, above all health and happiness!

 For the
International Union Board of Directors

      Your

32 Leonbergers  flanked the driveway at a crematorium as a mark of respect to Fred Inwood, who died aged 80 after six decades as a breeder.
Leonberger owners from all over Britain bought their pooches to the ceremony in Basingstoke, Hants, to say farewell to Fred.
His widow Jenny said: "It's a fitting testament to Fred that the dogs were with him today. He loved them.
"I'm so touched because what could have been a very sad day has turned into a tribute to Fred's life."

From Adelaide now:

Online scam swindles dog lovers

ONLINE scammers have swindled thousands of dollars out of dog lovers by selling puppies that never arrive.

Vicitms of the scam paid between $1440 and $2725 to "Newfview Kennels" which claims to have a kennel in South Australia but is not a registered business.
Minister for Consumer Affairs Gail Gago said the website claims to have Newfoundland, Chesapeake and Leonberger puppies for sale and provides a mobile number to call to place an order.
"All transactions are made via telephone and money is paid directly into a bank account belonging to Andrew Pike of Newfview Kennels," Ms Gago said.
After payment, a delivery date is set and agreed to but the puppies fail to arrive on the scheduled date.
These unsuspecting customers have not received a puppy or a refund despite repeated requests and promises."
Six people have made formal complains to the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs.

From ABC news:

A warning has been issued about a business claiming to sell puppies after six complaints were received by the South Australian Office of Consumer Affairs.
SA Consumer Affairs Minister Gail Gago says in one case the internet business called new view kennels was paid nearly $3,000 for a puppy but failed to deliver it.
Ms Gago says she has taken the rare step of issuing a public warning about the man running the business, Andrew Pike.
"SAPOL [South Australian Police] are working with police in other states in an attempt to locate Mr Pike," she said.
"He's got a track record of dishonest behaviour. Back in 2006 in New South Wales he was actually convicted of falsely representing himself as a solicitor.

The here mentioned kennel has in the past years contacted several Leonberger breeders to buy puppies from them.
Accordirg to reliable informations he doesn't owe any Leonberger at the moment.

International judges Seminar 2009.

Judges play an important role in the canine world.
A passion that is pursued with great love, commitment and provision of personal free time.
This includes the will to and obligation for ongoing training, which was accaomplishd this weekend with a large number of international participants.

"International" is indeed the right word,  33 participants from 15 nations had traveled to the hometown of the Leonberger to attend this event.

Our President and Conference Chairman Willi Güllix warmly welcomed the fellow  judges  on behalf of the Board of the International Union  and expressed his hope that the event would run  smoothly and that the seminar would be interesting,  and informative for all participants..

The objective of the event was  to present and discuss the points on the agenda in a professional manner.

For multilingual seminars it is important that documentation and correct translation is available for all. Therefore the speakers worked with modern equipment, like  a laptop with power point presentations, partly in German and English. On two screens.  The discussions and comments were immediately translated.

Explained in lectures by an international team, and  widely discussed,  were;

Dr. Guido Perosino (Italy), Focus: The head of the Leonberger, analysis of standard requirements for form and expression, using head study pictures.

Peter Cejnek (Austria) , Focus: The breed image evolution and related quality changes.

Petra Junehall (Sweden) , Focus: type and proportions, disqualifying faults.

Willi Güllix (Germany), Focus:  Gait, movement, and course of movement, caninus narrow standing, interpretation of the breed standard and writing critiques.

The final word was reserved for our President. The good work of the speakers, who had spent days and weeks in preparing the speeches, was  rewarded with a big applause.

Hoping that the goal, being an uniform evaluation of our breed, has come a   good step closer, he didn’t only thank the participants for coming, but also for their participation in fruitful discussions.

Internationale Zuchtrichter-Tagung 2009
7-8 November. Clubheim / Leonberg.

Hein Sibrijns

As result of the “International Judges Seminar 2009” the participating judges agreed on following recommendations:
Over the coming years they shall, whilst judging our breed, pay extra attention to a substantial/harmonic construction, correct proportions of head and muzzle, straight parallel fore and hind legs with obvious angulation in the hind legs, and especially see to the carriage of the tail while standing and in movement as prescribed by the standard.
