International judges Seminar 2009.

Judges play an important role in the canine world.
A passion that is pursued with great love, commitment and provision of personal free time.
This includes the will to and obligation for ongoing training, which was accaomplishd this weekend with a large number of international participants.

"International" is indeed the right word,  33 participants from 15 nations had traveled to the hometown of the Leonberger to attend this event.

Our President and Conference Chairman Willi Güllix warmly welcomed the fellow  judges  on behalf of the Board of the International Union  and expressed his hope that the event would run  smoothly and that the seminar would be interesting,  and informative for all participants..

The objective of the event was  to present and discuss the points on the agenda in a professional manner.

For multilingual seminars it is important that documentation and correct translation is available for all. Therefore the speakers worked with modern equipment, like  a laptop with power point presentations, partly in German and English. On two screens.  The discussions and comments were immediately translated.

Explained in lectures by an international team, and  widely discussed,  were;

Dr. Guido Perosino (Italy), Focus: The head of the Leonberger, analysis of standard requirements for form and expression, using head study pictures.

Peter Cejnek (Austria) , Focus: The breed image evolution and related quality changes.

Petra Junehall (Sweden) , Focus: type and proportions, disqualifying faults.

Willi Güllix (Germany), Focus:  Gait, movement, and course of movement, caninus narrow standing, interpretation of the breed standard and writing critiques.

The final word was reserved for our President. The good work of the speakers, who had spent days and weeks in preparing the speeches, was  rewarded with a big applause.

Hoping that the goal, being an uniform evaluation of our breed, has come a   good step closer, he didn’t only thank the participants for coming, but also for their participation in fruitful discussions.

Internationale Zuchtrichter-Tagung 2009
7-8 November. Clubheim / Leonberg.

As result of the “International Judges Seminar 2009” the participating judges agreed on following recommendations:
Over the coming years they shall, whilst judging our breed, pay extra attention to a substantial/harmonic construction, correct proportions of head and muzzle, straight parallel fore and hind legs with obvious angulation in the hind legs, and especially see to the carriage of the tail while standing and in movement as prescribed by the standard.

The president’s Christmas and New Year’s message.

Dear members of the International Leonberger Union, dear  friends,

Now the year 2008 flies by quickly, Christmas is coming soon.  We cannot overlook it, time doesn’t stop, and again we are on the threshold of a new year.

Already in a few weeks the calendar 2009 will be hang on the wall.
In the advent season we often find contemplative moments where we can think about the events of the past year, about pleasure and sorrow, but also about successes and defeats.

What do we take along into the New Year?  At least wonderful memories and good feelings resulting from personal successes and being needed and challenged. But there are also losses and disappointments, because many hopes didn’t come true.

I may of course use the opportunity of the moment to think about the months of the past year.

Directly before the turn of the year it shows for every one of us whether the set goals were achieved.
That applies also to the board of the International Leonberger Union, where we will organize the in 2008 decided international judges seminar in 2009 and we will organize and evaluate in 2010 the Leonberger symposium. It applies also to us personally, when we think about our family and friends.

The whole year we are busy  with exhibitions and breeding issues.  And many ask themselves whether their work has been  meaningful for the  well-being of our breed how everything will continue to develop in the new year.

The new board did this also, in review of what was achieved since September, with a prognosis for the  year 2009.

The co-operation with the representatives of the member countries is a first class example of how efficient and harmonical teamwork can be, when the advancement of our breed and the International Leonberger Union is at stake. We are convinced that every member country works and will work by means of exercising caution, balancing between self regulation, obligations and performance review, as far as  the national kennel clubs allow.

Breeding and exhibitions are linked inseparably with one another , thus being  substantial components  in the club life of the individual member countries. To emphasize is the big number of international exhibitors, who visit, with substantial costs, dog shows all over Europe.  Their show entries make it possible to present the stand of the breeding throughout the year and to evaluate the quality of the breed on an international level. This deserves our respect and  acknowledgement.

The connection of tradition  and future, your  will and force,  to support the interests of the International Leonberger Union,  with the  associated responsibility  for our breed,  are sufficient stimulus and incentive  to stand with joy for our task in  the new year.

May the Advents and Christmas season bring you and your family new force and confidence for the year 2009,  for which I wish you all prosperity, and above all health and luck!

For the board of the International Union,
Your
President,  Willi Güllix

The board informs!  (16-12-2008)

ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION and the associated responsibility of breeders and stud owners.

Owing to recent events:
The following is the recommendation of the board regarding the procedures of artificial insemination in international breeding exchanges.

Fundamental:
According to International Breeding Rules of the FCI §6, it is in any case
forbidden to mate the bitch with more than one stud dog during the same oestrus cycle.  Consequently it is also not allowed to inseminate a bitch with semen from two or more stud dogs during the same heat!

Special precautions are needed when exporting semen to a country where the registering body allows multiple sire inseminations.

Approval process (if necessary):
First appropriate approval of artificial insemination has to be obtained, if regulations of the national kennel clubs or their breed clubs in the countries concerned dictate the necessity of such an approval.

Insemination contract/use of the semen:
Breeders and owners of stud dogs are strongly urged to negotiate a written contract before each insemination wherein the financial and other obligations of both parties are clearly defined.

In addition, the following points concerning the use of the semen should also be contained in the contract:

1.      The semen of the stud dog is to be used exclusively for the bitch named in the contract.

2.      Under no circumstances will the owners of the stud dog allow the insemination the bitch named in the contract during the same heat cycle, with semen from one or more other dogs.

3.       If not all available semen has been used by the veterinary surgeon for artificial insemination of the bitch, the breeder is not permitted to on sell it, or to use it for his own breeding, unless the stud owner from whom the semen was procured agrees, whereupon a renewal of the approval (see approval process), for a new insemination would be required.
Or the owner of the stud dog may instruct to keep the remaining frozen semen untouched until further notice, or to destroy it.

These guidelines should prove helpful in handling “Artificial Insemination” on an international level.

The president of the German Leonberger club is happy to be able to transmit following information:
Liebe Freunde,

 Dear Friends,

The German Kennel Club offers its Breed Clubs (that includes the DCLH)  the possibility to award on request in special cases the internal Club CAC in a foreign country.

To do so the DCHL must address such a request, together with a declaration of consent of the foreign club to “Das Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen (VDH) e.V.”.

The board of the DCLH has ruled as follows:
The DCLH internal club CAC  will only be awarded in proven exceptional cases in foreign countries, for example on jubilee club shows of member clubs of  the International Leonberger Union.

(When a dog has obtianed  4  DCLH internal club CACs from 3 different judges,  and the time span between the first and last CAC is over 12 months, the dog obtains the title
"Club Champion DCLH."  The CAC's can only be awarded in open class, intermediate class and champion class).

Kind regards

Willi Güllix, president of the DCLH.

Ahlen, Germany, 2 January 2008
The president of the international Leonberger Union sent following message to the presidents of the member clubs:

Dear members of the IULH,
please allow me, to wish you, your families, your Leonbergers and your clubs all the best for 2008.
On our last meeting of the Union a symposium for the level of the Leonberger race towards racial characteristics and possible problems was decided for September 2008.
The board started the planning immediatly.
We intended a symposium on a high scientific level and organized very well.
In the meanwhile we saw, that it is not possible to organize this symposium in such a short time. Certain problems should be cleared in a board meeting, but especially the agenda and the participation of the member clubs need to be discussed in a Union meeting.
For these reasons the board decided to postpone the symposium. Of course we will continne to work on it and will give you our proposal on our next meeting.
Thank you very much for your understanding.
Sincerely
Gerhard Zerle
